Rules & Classroom Covenant

  • Be on time and stay in your seat
  • Listen the first time instructions are given
  • Quiet when someone else is talking
  • Keep your hands, feet, and all objects to yourself
  • No profanity

It is important to establish the rules the first day. These are simple direct rules that need to be elaborated on a little. I will involve students in the process; this helps provide ownership for the rules. State rules positively.

I will spend this time teaching the rules to the students, and elaborate on what each rule means. This will include explaining the rules and behavior that meets the rules, modeling and practicing these behaviors, providing corrective feedback and providing praise and reinforcement when students follow the rules.

Rules will be posted along with "Our Classroom Covenant." This helps me to be consistent, and serves as a periodic reminder to students. It is important to emphasize the positive and explain the importance of the rules and convenant.

Our Classroom Covenant

  • I have a right to be happy, and to be treated with kindness in this room; this means that no one will laugh at me, ignore me, or hurt my feelings.
  • I have a right to be myself in this room; this means that no one will treat me unfairly because I am fat or thin, fast or slow, boy or girl.
  • I have the right to be safe in this room; this means that no one will hit me, kick me, punch me, or pinch me.
  • I have a right to hear and be heard in this room; this means that no one will yell, scream, or shout. ; My opinions and desires will be considered in any plans we make.
  • I have a right to learn about myself in this room; this means that I will be free to express my feelings and opinions without being interrupted or punished.
